Module 7 - Supporting Testing and Validation

Step 3 of 6

Industry Standards and Frameworks

I.

ISTQB Testing Vocabulary

The ISTQB Foundation Level syllabus defines much of the vocabulary used in professional testing.

A.

Key Terms

  • 1.A test case·A set of steps, inputs, and expected results
  • 2.A defect·A flaw that causes an actual result to differ from an expected one
  • 3.Severity versus priority
  • 4.Severity describes how bad a defect is; priority describes how urgently it should be fixed, and the two do not always move together.
  • 5.A cosmetic defect on a highly visible page may be low severity but high priority.
  • 6.A new OFA benefits from using this vocabulary precisely, since it is what technical teams and vendors use.
II.

ITIL and Operational Triage

Operational triage draws on ITIL incident management concepts.

A.

Key ITIL Concepts Applied to Triage

  • 1.Gathering who, what, when, how reproducible, and how many affected before forming a severity judgment.
  • 2.The standard escalation principle that an escalation should include what was already checked, not just what was observed.
