Team Process Awareness
I.
Process variation across teams
- A.Learning terminology is only part of the foundation an OFA 1 must build.
- B.Equally important is understanding how a specific team performs its work. While the objectives of requirements management, testing, issue management, and escalation are generally consistent, the methods used to accomplish them often vary between teams.
A.
Differences may include:
- 1.Requirements documentation approaches
- a.One team may capture requirements directly in structured work items.
- b.Another may begin with narrative documentation before converting requirements into work items.
- 2.Testing coordination practices
- a.One team may report testing issues immediately through a shared communication channel.
- b.Another may require issues to be logged in a tracking system and reviewed during scheduled meetings.
- 3.Escalation procedures
- a.Teams may differ in when issues are escalated, who receives escalations, and how escalation decisions are documented.
- 4.Process differences do not indicate that one team is operating correctly and another incorrectly. They reflect local operating practices established to support a team's work.
- 5.Effective OFAs learn the processes of the team they are supporting rather than assuming prior experience applies universally.
II.
Learning Team Processes
OFA 1s should make learning team processes a deliberate activity when joining a new team, project, or assignment.
A.
Useful questions include:
- 1.How are requirements documented and maintained?
- 2.How is testing planned, coordinated, and tracked?
- 3.How are issues, risks, and blockers escalated?
- 4.Which tools support these activities?
- 5.Who owns key decisions and approvals?
Seeking process clarification demonstrates professionalism and helps prevent avoidable mistakes during onboarding and project transitions.
